Natalya Viktorovna Usova Numerical Analysis of Gas Flow Within a Municipal Solid Waste Landfill


Numerical analysis and modelling of gas flow within MSW landfill has the potential to significantly enhance the efficiency of design and performance of operation for landfill gas extraction and utilization projects. Available models implement a simple theoretical basis and treat the landfilled waste fill purely as a porous medium with the conservation of mass inherently assumed and the ongoing gas generation thus ignored. The research described in this work was intended to evaluate the error introduced into estimates of the intrinsic permeability of waste from landfill gas pumping tests if the ongoing gas generation within the landfilled MSW is ignored when the pumping tests are evaluated to yield estimates of the permeability. Two different approaches were used to simulate gas flow in the unsaturated waste fill: GeoStudio2007 software suite and a 1-D FD solution. This work demonstrated that the gas generation term should not be ignored when the gas flow is evaluated for MSW. Thus, the correction charts is developed as a first step toward a reliable method that would enable such widely used software to be used with a correction factor to enable improved simulations of gas flow.

Strict European legislation forced the country to find alternative solutions to sole waste disposal on which the country had been relying on exclusively. Jessica Richard Toxicity of micropollutants during advanced oxidation processes


The main source for the detection of organic micropollutants in surface water is their incomplete removal during conventional waste water treatment processes. The use of advanced oxidation processes might therefore be a useful method to overcome this problem, and to degrade micropollutnats by the formation of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. This study was therefore designed to investigate the toxicological properties (cytotoxic, genotoxic, mutagenic and estrogenic) of several substances before and after ozonation or UV/H2O2 treatment in either waste water treatment plant effluents or HPLC-water using toxicological in vitro methods. In general it can be said that ozonation as well as the oxidation using a combination of UV radiation and hydrogen peroxide are two useful methods for the removal of the here tested substances from the effluents of waste water treatment plants in regard to their degradation and to prevent the formation of toxic oxidation by-products. The successful use of toxicological in vitro methods for the detection of biological effects of waste water treatment plant effluents in combination with advanced oxidation processes has also been shown.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: A, The American University, Washington, DC (School of International Service), language: English, abstract: Sustainable development goals (SDGs) and households' solid waste management (HSWM) in the Republic of Benin, West Africa is the focus of this research. It explicitly investigates fermentable (organic) waste. Drawing on qualitative research, it argues that households' waste management could be a driver in the achievement of the SDGs. It briefly examines the international context of waste policy establishment and the framework of internationally supported waste project in the Republic of Benin (RB or Benin) in order to demonstrate the importance of socio-cultural factors in the waste sector. Through the lenses of urban political ecology and political ecology of waste theories, it explains how the perception and the treatment of waste in pre-colonial Benin might have changed over time, compared to postcolonial Benin. Inspired by one of the main challenges of the 21st century, achieving a worldwide sustainable development, the paper suggests a different approach of perceiving and treating waste in general and organic waste in particular. It argues that a community-based approach based on cooperatives could be the answer to the waste issue, but could also provide a canvas for the successful and inclusive achievement of the SDGs in Benin.

Shaikh Fahim Low Temperature Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation


Depending on the pollutant type, certain wastewater treatment technologies can be very energy intensive. This "Diplomarbiet" looks at Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation (CWAO) for treatment of organic contaminated waste water. With an aim to reduce energy consumption a new catalyst was designed to enable total oxidation of organic contaminants in water at a much lower temperature compared to existing catalysts. This in turn allows to operate the CWAO at much lower operating pressures as compared to conventional CWAO utilizing noble metal catalysts. The catalyst also demonstrated good stability and activity over extended period and no significant leaching was observed. Low temperature CWAO is an effective technology for treatment of organic contaminated waste and its application range can be extended if coupled with other wastewater treatment technologies.
